Winning the first Album of the Year Grammy for a Spanish-language record was historic. Holding more than fifty registered trademarks in the United States is what makes the career durable.

The portfolio is not one filing repeated. It covers the artist name, tour names, album titles used as brands, and merchandising lines, spread across the classes that matter: recorded music, live entertainment, clothing, accessories, beverages.

Why breadth of classes matters

A trademark registration only protects the goods and services listed in it. Registering a name for musical recordings does not stop someone selling t-shirts under it. Artists who file narrowly discover this when the merchandising money arrives and a third party is already selling the apparel.

The same logic applies to any business that expects to extend its product line. Filing in class 25 for clothing when you also plan a beverage or a café means a second application later, at a moment when someone may already have filed.

How to build a portfolio without overspending

Start with the classes where you trade today, plus the one or two you can realistically reach in eighteen months. Review annually. In Mexico each class is a separate application with its own official fee, so this is a budgeting exercise as much as a legal one, and it is far cheaper than buying the class back from someone else.
